The 997 Chrono App

The 997 Chrono app connects to your display over Bluetooth and lets you change every setting, bind your tyre sensors, upload your own clock faces and splash screens, and update the firmware — all without taking the unit out of the car.

Before you start

• Your display needs firmware v2 or later. App support arrived with version 2. If your display is still on a v1.x release, do one update over USB using the firmware update guide — after that, everything can be done from your phone.
• The display needs to be powered. Either turn the ignition on, or power the unit from its USB-C port on the bench.
• Bluetooth on, phone nearby. You’ll also need to be able to see and reach the display, because it asks your permission before letting a phone make changes.
• Keep the SD card in. Clock faces and splash screens are stored on the card, so it needs to be fitted for artwork uploads to work. Every display ships with one.

Connecting for the first time

1. Power up the display — ignition on, or USB-C on the bench.
2. Open the 997 Chrono app and allow it to use Bluetooth if prompted.
3. The app scans for nearby displays. Yours advertises itself as 997 Chrono — tap it to connect, and accept the Bluetooth pairing request on your phone.
4. Look at the display in the car and approve the connection there.
5. The header turns to Connected and then Sync complete once the app has read your current settings. You’re ready to go.

Finding your way around

The app is organised into tabs along the top — swipe sideways to reach them all:

• General — vehicle, gearbox, units, themes, backlight and start screen
• Clock — which clock face is used for each theme
• RPM — buzzer, shift alert, and the three bar metrics
• Temperature — the two panel metrics and auto-switch thresholds
• Acceleration — speed unit, speed offset and stalk navigation
• TPMS and TPMS Bind — wheel profiles, and pairing sensors to corners
• Images — upload splash screens and clock faces
• Update and Version — firmware updates and device information

The bar at the top always shows the connection state, with Reboot and Disconnect to hand.

Changing settings

Every option on the device’s own settings screen is here, and it’s far easier than tapping through menus on a round screen in the footwell. A few settings — larger fonts, the thicker RPM bar, and the RPM centre layout — need the display to restart, and the app tells you so underneath the setting. Use Reboot at the top when you’re done.

Tyre pressure sensors

This is where the app really earns its keep. Binding TPMS sensors on the device itself means squinting at sensor IDs on a round screen — in the app it’s a list you can read.

On the TPMS tab, turn on as many of the four wheel profiles as you need and give each one a label — Summer, Winter, Track, Track Dry, Track Wet, Spare or Others.

On TPMS Bind, pick the profile you’re setting up, tap Scan, and the app lists every sensor it can hear — showing its ID, signal strength, and live pressure, temperature and battery percentage. Choose a sensor, choose the corner it’s fitted to (FL, FR, RL or RR), and it’s bound. The existing bindings for the selected profile are listed at the top, with how long ago each sensor was last heard from.

Clock faces and splash screens

The Images tab uploads artwork straight to the display, so you no longer need to pull the unit apart to get at the SD card. Choose whether you’re sending a Splash screen or a Clock Face, then tap Pick Image and Upload and choose the picture from your phone. Images should be square — the display is round, so the corners won’t be seen.

The same tab has a Default Uploads section for putting the original faces and splash screen back if you want to start over. On the Clock tab you then choose which face is used for your lights-on theme and which for lights-off, with a preview of each.

Updating the firmware

This is the big one. With the app, firmware updates happen over the air — no cables, no removing the pod, no PC. Updates are free, and we release them regularly.

Open the Update tab. It shows the firmware currently on your display and the latest version available — if you’re already current, it simply says up to date. Tap Check for updates to refresh, and Update now to install. Approve it on the display when asked, then keep your phone nearby and leave the display powered until it finishes and restarts.

Two things worth knowing: updates are digitally signed, so the display will only ever accept genuine firmware; and it keeps a backup copy of the previous version, so an interrupted update can’t leave you with a dead unit.

If it won’t connect

• The display doesn’t appear in the app. Check it’s powered and showing a screen, that your phone’s Bluetooth is on, and that you’re close to the car. If your display is on a v1.x release it won’t advertise at all — update once over USB first.
• It connects but won’t let you change anything. The connection has to be approved on the display itself. If you missed the prompt, disconnect in the app and reconnect.
• Your changes haven’t taken effect. Check the counter at the bottom — if it still shows pending changes, tap Apply Updates. If the setting says a reboot is required, use Reboot at the top.
• It connected before but won’t now. Turn your phone’s Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect. On the display, Clear Bonded Devices in the settings removes previously paired phones so you can start fresh.
• A sensor won’t appear when scanning. Sensors only transmit once they’re above pressure, and they broadcast every few minutes when pressures are steady — give it up to ten minutes. Check the micro SD card is fitted if artwork uploads are failing.
